This model will contain a bi-allelic deletion within the Snca gene, encoding for synuclein, alpha (non-A4 component of amyloid precursor) protein, which plays a role in synaptic biogenesis and organization.
Alpha-synuclein has been implicated in several neurodegenerative diseases, including Parkinson's and dementia. It is thought to regulate dopamine synthesis. Mutations within the gene are also present in some Alzheimer's disease cases, making this model important for the study neurodegeneration.
